Quilt Square (9 of 13), 2019, Archival inkjet prints, thread

Community Photo Quilt Workshop

Wednesday, October 18th, 2-6 p.m. Island Free Library Artist Talk @ 2 p.m.

Participants of all ages are invited to drop in anytime between 2-6 p.m. to make quilt-inspired squares using printed photos.

My work involves cutting and sewing photographs into large-scale collages that draw from the patterns and history of quilts. I hope to share my practice with participants to engage with photography and quilting concepts in new and experimental ways.

Workshop participants will make two (or more) 6”x6” quilt squares using archival inkjet photos and any other materials they’d like to incorporate (fabric, foliage, etc.) I will begin the workshop with a brief introduction to my artistic practice, and then demonstrate how I make quilt-inspired squares using photographs. In advance of the workshop, I plan to print photos I’ve taken of places on Block Island. This printed collection of photographs will be available for each participant to use. Attendees are also welcome to bring their photos to use. Participants will design and sew a photo quilt square to take home and a second square to leave for the community photo quilt project. The size and shape of the final community quilt will depend on how many squares are collected at the end of the workshop. Once the community photo quilt form is complete, I will return to the island to install the work at a designated site on Block Island.
